"Competitor" news -- Zoran earnings cut...............................

RESEARCH ALERT-Salomon cuts Zoran EPS
Reuters Story - August 05, 1997 04:26
TEL AVIV, Aug 5 (Reuter) - Salomon Brothers cut its
estimates for Zoran Corp's 1997 and 1998 earnings per share due
to delays in the introduction of PCs with DVD-ROM (digital
versatile disk) drives.
"We are reducing our 1997 earnings per share estimate (EPS)
from $0.75 to $0.59 as investment in research and development
and selling, general and administrative expenses will accelerate
as a result of a wide number of new products and increased
technical support to the company's customers," analyst Victor
Halpert said in a report released on Tuesday.
Salomon also lowered its 1998 EPS estimate to $1.16 from
$1.20. In 1996 Zoran earned $0.42 a share.
The Israeli company is the sole maker of all software,
hardware and hybrid compression solutions for the multimedia
market. Current applications for its compression technology
include DVD players and DVD-ROM for PCs.
DVD is considered to be the next generation optical disc
standard and is expected to substitute today's compact discs.
"In our recent survey of PC manufacturers, most indicated
PCs with a DVD-ROM solution will be available starting September
1997," Halpert said.
Salomon maintained its buy recommendation for Zoran.
"Zoran will remain the technological leader in DVD
compression products and its full potential should be realised
in coming quarters," the report said.
