The war in Iraq is over. The regime of Saddam is finished. The entire western world and lots of the Islamic world are happy about this. Well done, George.

The current situation in Iraq is the coalition policing the place, fighting against "insurgents/terrorists/local population" (whatever you want to call them) until other local Iraqis can take over. Theoretically, this situation could continue indefinitely - all it requires is the coalition maintain its resolve (we're not leaving until the job is finished and there is a safe, secure democracy in Iraq) and the "insurgents/terrorists/local population" maintain their resolve (we're not giving up until the Americans leave - car bombs away!!).

This situation has little support either from within the US, from the rest of the western world or within the Islamic world. The US population supported the idea of removing Saddam (which is accomplished). I doubt the US supports the idea of policing Iraq for the next 20-30 years.

If you ask me, the coalition ought to be spending the majority of its time training Iraqis to be policemen, and then sending Iraqis to the police the place. The "insurgent/terrorist/local population" problem is there problem, not the coalition's problem. If Iraq is offered a chance at democracy and chooses not to take it, the coalition oughtta leave.

And US efforts to mandate democracy in Arab countries would be a lot more effective starting with the EASY targets, like Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates.
