Violent passion is one of the unintended consequences of concentrating more and more political power in Wash. DC. If your side ( whatever "side" that is ) looses, you are 100% frustrated. You either become cynical and drop out, you double your efforts to win next time ( and turn into a one issue voter ), or a tiny fraction will turn violent.

The beauty of the founders vision of diffusing power ( which I know you embrace as well ) is that if you're side looses in your state, and you are passionate about the issue, there's bound to be at least 1 of the 50 states where the people feel differently. You can expend you energy in packing up and moving. If you pour a 50 ft driveway in one slab, it will crack, and quickly disintegrate. Pour it in 5 or 6 slabs and stress can be concentrated at the seams and it will last for years.

Until the trend of the last 60 years is reversed, I predict we'll see more Federal Building tragedies - God forbid.
