I think it's too easy to fall into a line of thought that we actually know better today when plainly not the indications. The "dark ages" are only dark because we don't know much about them.

This is what we had circa 1215. Very civilized. Not doubt the good work of previous centuries efforts. Various entities had forgotten / misplaced ideas of role in society, and it was all written down for convenient referral for future generations.
