Advanced Digital Information Corporation (Nasdaq:ADIC) today announced that its Scalar(R) 100 has received the tape library "Best Buy" award in the Network News tape automation bench tests.
The award announcement highlights the Scalar 100's leading storage-to-price ratio and its design for use in enterprise Storage Area Networks (SAN) and Network Attached Storage (NAS), among other applications. The publication also praised the library's drive independent design, created to provide support for the industry's widest range of tape technologies, including DLT, AIT, LTO, and SuperDLT. The review noted that "the number of optional features combined with the high expansion potential and scalability makes this a highly recommended enterprise level automated backup product."
"We're pleased but not surprised to see the Scalar 100 emerge as the clear favorite in extensive testing against a broad range of leading competitors," commented Bill Britts, executive vice president of Sales and Marketing. "The Scalar 100 sets new standards for scalability, density, drive support, connectivity and value. The user community has rewarded its innovative approach to data protection with a rapid and enthusiastic acceptance. Results like these from a leading international test trial are further demonstration of its effectiveness."
Headquartered in London, Network News is a leading international authority on new networking technology, trends and products, specializing in rigorous laboratory testing designed to mirror real world applications. The library test suite included high performance backup and restore of the kinds of files that characterize typical large-scale enterprise computing environments, including a mixture of desktop files, data and voice communications, as well as database, video, and web applications. Overall product ratings were based on a combination of performance, quality, features, ease of installation and use, and value.
"Despite its compact size, the Scalar 100 offers exceptionally high levels of scalability, making it an ideal choice for enterprises looking to move their back-up operations from single-tape drives or low-capacity desktop autoloaders," noted David Mitchell, publication spokesman. "The ADIC(R) Scalar 100 provided one of the best storage-to-price ratios, and combined this with a wealth of optional extras that included both SAN and NAS options, full remote web management and support for the widest range of current and future tape technologies."
In its tested configuration, based on DLT tape technology, the award-winning Scalar 100 supports up to six drives and 60 tape cartridge positions for a total capacity of up to 4.8TB in only 14 units of standard rack space (less than 25 vertical inches). The Scalar 100 can support SCSI, SAN and NAS connectivity and is easily administered through an integrated Web management option. The Scalar 100 is available now with prices starting at less than $20,000.
