He's skimming, not reading. That's part of his problem.

I suspect the term "make him an offer he can't refuse" jumped out at him, but he failed to read the phrase in context.

I was referring to a co-worker making a monetary offer to buy the house next door that "they couldn't refuse". She wanted to make an offer that was so overwhelming that they'd just take it, sell her the house, and go away. No "mafia imagery" was intended.

It's a phrase that has become a part of popular culture, and it may be a misuse of the phrase - mea culpa. It's widely used to refer to any ovewhelming offer, without any secondary meaning. (But, wasn't that phrase in use, with the meaning that I'd intended, long before the movie?)

It was certainly secondary to the point, which was that she was focused too much on what she was going to do with her unrealized QCOM gain, and too little on whether or not she felt it had room for further appreciation, or whether it would be prudent to start taking some off the table.

BTW, she just hung on, losing the bulk of her profits.
