Kasan Exports DVD Boards to Japan
Kasan Electronics has begun to export its DVD (digital video disk) boards for PCs to the Japanese market. The company said yesterday that it has recently signed an agreement with Softbank Corp., one of the largest distributors of software and computer devices, to supply about $6 million worth of DVD boards and 3-dimension video graphic array boards.

Kasan is one of the world's first companies to develop DVD boards for PCs. In June this year, it qualified for Dolby AC-3 specifications, the international audio standard for DVD drives. Globally, it was the third firm, following Japan's Matsushita and Toshiba, which has been certified by Dolby Lab of the United States on the new standard. The new Dolby audio standard turned out to be a major hurdle for many board makers. Kasan expects shipments to Japan to surge next year as the Japanese DVD market is growing very rapidly.

The company has also received an order from GPM Electronics of Finland for its multimedia devices. It has already shipped its WinX VGA boards and other gadgets. GPM Electronics also wants Kasan to supply DVD boards and 56 Kbps (kilobits per second) modems.
