Alaska in general has a huge problem with substance abuse. It's all kind of a mystery to me, because I'm not susceptible to such things.

If I recall correctly, Alaska has one of the highest rates of substance abuse of all the states.

Not to justify it, but many natives find themselves in limbo between getting out of their environment and working to better it. If they get educated and return, they often find themselves rejected by their local culture, and if they did not fully assimilate in the mainstream culture they don't know where to go.
