Yup. Agreed. Way over the top, and I should have noted that.
About the monitors, power consumption of: agreed. We kicked it around a while back, discussing the use of LCD screens, among other things. Your comment about screensavers (as opposed to putting the monitor on standby while you're away) is right on, and apparently unknown to many.
I agree with your objections; yet I still support the point the author was making, however poorly stated. The aim seems to be a wired world (with a significant always-on wireless segment). The implications of worldwide ubiquitous connectivity, when translated into power demand, are non-trivial.
That said, I disagree with the Luddites, and with the doomsday scenarios.
At the beginning of this debate, I said the consequences of one or two more doubles in world population would have hellacious consequences. That scenario is achievable in the next 50 years.
Whether we can accomodate that future, without some pain, is debatable. I think people are ignoring many compounding subtractive factors when they look down the road.
