Rokita takes apology to airwaves April 17, 2007 03:54 PM Kevin Rader/Eyewitness News Indianapolis - Indiana Secretary of State Todd Rokita sent out an apology on the radio for comments he made over the weekend. Many people who have heard about those remarks consider them offensive and even racist. Secretary of State Rokita took his apology to the airwaves Tuesday one day after he was quoted by a Washington, Indiana newspaper as saying that African Americans vote 90 percent Democrat and he questioned why. "How can that be?" Rokita said. "90 to 10. Who's the master and who's the slave in that relationship? How can that be healthy?" "What the hell were you thinking?" Amos Brown, radio talk show host, angrily questioned Rokita. "The word choice I used was poor. It was sloppy," said Rokita. "Are you sorry for what you said?" Brown said. "Absolutely. To me that is what asking for forgiveness is." Then the listeners at WTLC-AM got their chance. "It is getting to the point now where they think they can just say anything and an apology will make it okay. If you are a true politician you should be watching everything that comes out of your mouth wherever you are," said one caller. "You speak very eloquently. That lets me know you have very good language skills. So to me you knew exactly what you were saying when you were saying it," said another caller. "Wouldn't you think it is fair to say you didn't think the media would bring this out and that is why you said what you said?" questioned another caller. "I didn't know his name but I knew there was media in the room," Rokita replied. The secretary took thirty minutes of calls in total. With that, Rokita said it's time for him to get back to doing the people's business. wthr.com
