As you've discovered, it's a whole lot easier on the nerves to be fiddling with a working system at your leisure than to be faced with both a system crash and a deadline.

I'm glad you took the time to test your safety net. I only have my own observations, which I readily admit are limited, but I sincerely believe that a significant fraction of back-ups, rescue disks, images, and procedures will fail in their time of need.

I believe your post will convince more people of the need of testing than anything I can write. I'm sure many of us have learned that life is too short to make all the mistakes ourselves, and that observing others' difficulties is sufficient to convince us of the dangers.

P.S. I once worked in a computer department where backups were made every evening. The operator made 14 one night, just before leaving on a two week vacation. It kept her boss happy to observe that her work wasn't neglected.
