Oak Technology Partners with Orion, Japan's Leading Home Video Products Manufacturer, on its DVD Solution
The OTI-226 Delivers MPEG Decoding, Dolby Digital Audio and Video Copyright Protection to Orion's New Line of Consumer DVD Players
SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 26, 1998-- Oak Technology (NASDAQ:OAKT - news), a provider of high-performance semiconductors for consumer electronics, today announced that its OTI-226 DVD decoder chip has been designed into Orion Electronic Company's new line of home DVD players.
Orion's DVD player is currently shipping in Asia with production shipments worldwide targeted for September 1998. By utilizing the OTI-226's ability to support both DVD and VideoCD (VCD) titles, Orion's DVD player provides a ''theater-like'' experience at home for both movie viewing and Karaoke applications.
Orion is a leading provider of home entertainment systems in Japan and one of the world's top two manufacturers of videocassette recorders (VCRs). The company's full-featured DVD player is targeted toward the mainstream DVD market.
Orion chose the OTI-226 solution for its debut DVD player offering because of its outstanding video and audio quality, high level of integration, and ability to handle a wide range of media content. The OTI-226 supports 2-channel mix-down of Dolby Digital audio streams and provides both digital and analog outputs for audio. In addition to audio and video decoding, the OTI-226 has a sophisticated full-screen, on-screen display for presenting user options and navigational data.
Utilizing advanced error correction and concealment, the OTI-226 enables the Orion DVD player to provide a high level of DVD and VCD media compatibility. Multiple video formats such as Letterbox, Pan & Scan, and unaided 3:2 pulldown are also supported by the solution, so that studio-quality movies can be viewed on a standard television set.
''Orion brings to the DVD arena strong distribution channels and brand recognition,'' said Paul Vroomen, president of Oak Technology's Consumer Group. ''We believe that these proven strengths, combined with Oak's high-performance DVD silicon, will deliver affordable, high-performance DVD players to the consumer.''
The newly established Consumer Group at Oak develops integrated circuits for the digital television (DTV) markets, including silicon for video-disk players (VCD and DVD) and cable, satellite and terrestrial set-top boxes.
