Well, that's sort of how it is, actually. In the early going, the candidates who are well ahead in the money-raising department want everyone else to know about it, because it discourages people from giving any more money to the competitors who aren't doing so well in the money race. If you can't show that you are one of the early leaders in the money race, your money dries up pretty fast. People don't like giving much of their own money to a losing cause.
