Thanks, Richard. You're right, of course. IBD's "Guide to the Markets" was a bit unclear on this. In another paragraph, it does say RS "compares a stock's price change over the last 12 months to those of all other stocks," but it doesn't give a formula. Then, in referring to a chart of Scott Paper, it says its RS line is derived by "dividing the stock's closing price by the close of the S&P 500 index and charting the resulting ratio." Don't know what they mean by that. Shows what little can be gained by skimming.
