hanneling John C. Calhoun [Mark Krikorian]

Mayor Gavin Newsom reiterated San Francisco's status as a "sanctuary city" which defies federal immigration law. That's unfortunately not new, but I thought this was interesting: "There are a lot of cities that want these raids. That's where the federal government should be spending their time." This would seem to go beyond even the nullification theory of the slave states — in other words, Newsom seems to be saying not just that local jurisdictions may block enforcement of federal laws, but that enforcement of federal laws should only take place where localities actually request it. It's therefore imperative, if only for constitutional reasons, that immigration authorities stage a couple of high-profile raids in San Francisco.
