The conflict between Sun and HP is something that could be solved with good leadership. At least we now have a benchmark by which to measure the new leader Pat Sueltz. If she can get HP to license Java from Sun, and and have them pulling together, I will consider her to be a winner. If nothing like this happens, then I will wonder what her contribution is.

From what I have seen of Chai, HP give me the impression that they really would like to license Java, if Sun was more flexible about it at the low-end embedded space. I think this will happen naturally, and is already happening as Sun push into embedded Java. So the last remaining obstacle is the runtime royalty: and that should be solvable with simple business negotiation. And leave Microsoft out in the cold, where they deserve to be.
