" when a majority can control all branches, de Tocqueville explained, there is a danger: "If ever freedom is lost in America, that will be due to the omnipotence of the majority driving the minority to desperation and forcing them to appeal to physical force."

I don't think anyone would be supportive of permanent control of all the branches by a single party. However, when one party is positioned to obstruct the good work of the other (as we've had of late), then a time during which the ostructed party takes control is not necessarily a bad thing. Republican though I am, I would certainly not favor a permanent republican majority. I'd like to how this works out, a few years at a time.

It isn't as though if one party gets control for a couple of years it is likely to result in disaster. The pendulum will swing back the other way a couple years down the road. But in the meantime, we get a few things done that were impossible due to the politics of the moment before.
