re: Siemens S46 "Worldphone"

<< "..The S46 also is GPRS-enabled.." ... For TDMA users? The challenge of GAIT handsets is to afford TDMA users the ability to access to the full plate of GSM/GPRS services. There appears to be no indication that Siemens is GAIT enabled, but merely multi-mode for rudimentary connectivity. >>

The Siemens S-46 is not a "true" GAIT phone, and that distinction has been made about it in the recent past. It lacks AMPS (which essentially would make it "true" GAIT assuming all other characteristics of GAIT standards are implemented).

The phone is as you state multi-mode (multi-band) and uses a TDMA SIM. It operates TDMA 850/1900 and GSM 900/1900 for operation in the majority of 172 countries where GSM roaming is available.

It does more than provide "rudimentary connectivity".

When operating in TDMA mode on an IS-136 network it provides the full complement of TDMA services afforded by that network, and when operating in GSM mode it provides "the ability to access to the full plate of GSM/GPRS services" when on a GSM GPRS or EDGE network.

Some comments have been made on various boards recently that the S46 had to be manually placed in either TDMA or GSM mode, however the release states that "the S46 automatically selects the preferred network with a built-in search mechanism that initially looks for a GSM signal and then for a TDMA signal if a GSM connection is unavailable".

<< The challenge of GAIT handsets is to afford TDMA users the ability to access to the full plate of GSM/GPRS services >>

Allowing TDMA users the ability to access to the full plate of GSM/GPRS services when operating on an ANSI-41 IS-136 network is not a function specified by GAIT, even though GAIT standardized 3rd party platforms effectively bridge the core networks.

Currently (at least) two "true" GAIT phones (850/1900 AMPS/TDMA/GSM) have been announced. Others will follow.

The first to deliver in Q2 will be the Nokia (no GPRS) and the second to deliver in Q3 will be from Sony Ericsson (GPRS).
