NOW THE DEMOCRATS DECIDE THEY DON'T LIKE EXECUTIVE ORDERS AFTER ALL

Democrats led by New York Sen. Charles Schumer and Ohio Rep. Dennis Kucinich are preparing to hold hearings next week on President Bush's decision to try non-Americans accused of terrorism in military tribunals. Most, if not all, of these tribunals would likely be overseas and again, no American citizens would be subject to them. Kucinich is planning to offer legislation that will ban the use of government money for the secret trials (effectively shutting them down). The Democrats say that Bush should have consulted Congress first.

Please note the emergence of a new political rule here. Democratic presidents do NOT have to consult with Congress before they sign sweeping executive orders. Republican presidents do. Go figure.

Kucinich also released a letter on Tuesday signed by 39 members of the House which said, "We oppose the creation of military tribunals, which would permit secret arrests, secret charges using secret evidence, secret prosecutions, secret witnesses, secret trials, secret convictions, secret sentencing and even secret executions.'' I guess we can assume that they are in favor of public arrests, public charges using public evidence, public prosecutions, public witnesses, public trials, public convictions, public sentencing and even public executions. If you thought the O.J. trial was a circus, just imagine THAT scenario! I suggest that we draft Democrats to serve as jury members in those open trials. What's that old saying about "nervous as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs?"

By the way, Democrats weren't the only ones who signed Kucinich's letter. Rep. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) signed it -- no surprise there. He’s listed as an independent, calls himself a Socialist, but he's a Democrat in every way but name. Oh, and Georgia Rep. Bob Barr also put his John Hancock on the letter. He was the only Republican to do so.
