"But presuming an innate right to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness is the most rational way to support individual freedom and to make life worth living--IMO."

You are tossing the word 'principle' around pretty losely. Most people use the word principle as in 'principles of living' in the context of codes of conduct that are fundamental to a life worth living or a world view.

It makes sense that materialists would value survival above other values but in the mainstream of thought it is more of a fundamental drive than a code of conduct. Even for a materialist (as you have argued in the past) suicide might be a choice over surviving in a state of pain or extreme suffering.

For example: I value honor, justice and liberty, higher than I do survival. I would not want to live a dishonorable life just to keep eating and sleeping, if I could fight even to the death for a better way. I would agree to risk the ultimate sacrifice if it were a forced choice. However, because survival is a fundamental drive, I would likely be fighting for the last breath out of instinct.
