That's only if you assume that the hp touch pad sold 200k instead of 2mil....

My conclusion has nothing to do with the HP Touchpad, which did not sell 2 million, by any stretch of your vivid imagination.

Let me walk you through the most direct calculation. Slowly. Chitika reported ad impressions for the Nexus 7 as a ratio of Nexus 7 impressions to iPad impressions, divided by 100. So when they reported the Nexus 7 ad impressions as 0.3, that's 0.3 impressions for every 100 iPad impressions. I estimated about 100 million iPads are in use. Then the implication was there are 0.3 million Nexus 7's in use.

Ta da!

Note that these data also imply:
  1. 890K Motorola Xooms in use, which is close to the 1 million Xooms shipped in 2011 + 0 shipped in 2012 (2012 shipments are my estimate).
  2. 1.18 million Asus tablets in use (close to the 1.5 million ASUS tablets sold in 2011 + very few shipped in 2012
  3. 2.7 million Galaxy Tabs in use (not very close to the 5 million 7" Original Gingerbread Tabs you claim Samsung sold at Costco).
  4. 900K Kindle Fires in use (not close to the estimated 5 million shipped to date, but I think the Silk browser proxy might be to blame there).

So the data is not perfect, but it seems to me to be in the right ballpark. Anyone who thinks that the Nexus 7 is selling in tens of millions (either currently or in the foreseeable future) is engaging in wishful thinking.
