You're absolutely right, monopoly isn't guaranteed. It will take sound management to make sure that ZIP remains the industry standard. That is why they will probably license the technology. I'm sure they don't want to fall into the Sony Betamax or IBM Microchannel syndrome. The best way to deter competition from organizing and forming a new standard is to make the current standard open. I'm sure Iomega will have big healthy royalty revenues in coming years. And yes, I do know how wealthy the companies you mentioned are. I worked for one of them for 7 years. Wealth does not necessarily translate into good management or good marketing or good products. Iomega is a perfect example of how much can be done with so little. I remain firm in my belief that any competitive product must be compatible with the huge installed base of ZIP's or it will be doomed from the onset. As far as being cash poor, this too will pass.
