Greg, pretty good questions, I'll attempt some answers.

<<Is it realistic to consider the possibility of linking several [storage] facilities in a MAN into a single SAN?>>

Yes, through zoning.

<<Would this SAN require dedicated fiber or could it be leased?>>

Either way. Again, zoning would provide security across either private or leased fiber.

<<What other alliances might need to be formed to allow long distance SANs?>>

Further enhancements to IP, underway at this time. Zoning can add security to Virtual Private Networks (VPN) "hosted" by public carriers, currently beset by security concerns.

Believe me, SANs are just the tip of the Fibre Channel iceberg. And, as we all well know, switches are at the center of everything. Have you ever seen such a no-brainer in all your life?

Douglas
