Both countries face different challenges Itchy.

Our challenge is:

How long do we want to be known as the wealthiest country in the world - and the only one that does not provide universal health insurance when we could and should?

Canada's is:

How can we make our present universal health care system more efficient, effective and cost effective?

Very different problems. Most of the resistance to universal health care comes not from the citizenry in the US, but from the entrenched economic special interests groups, insurance companies, hospital corporations, HMO's, drug companies, etc. who spend hundreds of millions of dollars on fear-mongering advertising and lobbying. They fear for their economic self-interests.

In this country, the Republicans are aligned with these groups. Bill Frist's (Republican Senate majority leader) family OWNS one of the hospital corporations that see's itself at risk from universal health care.
