I don't get it. Advocating the amendment doesn't buy the Republicans any more votes, it wouldn't seem. The only people who care about banning gay marriage enough to base their vote on that issue are already going to vote for Bush. I don't see that there are any additional votes to be gained and, in a close election, a lot of moderates to be turned off by the overkill. Not that I think that the election will be close, mind you.
