A lot of sun high end servers are running enterprise software packages. Enterprise software has a lot of problems but one of them is definitely y2k... in fact, this term "lockdown" is pretty common these days where absolutely no changes are allowed in software after Sep or so is what I am seeing. Generally software upgrades drive high end hardware sales... the y2k unix fix has been in for 9 mos.

Then of course there are always those companies such as McCue systems of Burlingame, Ca that have a proprietary package that runs on a third party VMS emulator that runs on unix, and the VMS package isn't y2k compliant therefore the entire train is at a standstill - heh. There are very few of these cases fortunately.

PC software is a whole other matter, I see no reason why you couldn't upgrade even an NT box (that wasn't running Sap) a few weeks before y2k.
