hi marty
regarding the windoc errors... my advice, given the extent of the difficulties you are having, is to let windoc fix what it has found using the solution it automatically chooses. remember, there is an undo repair feature you can avail yourself of if you find that you must.
the probs with the windows directx diagnostic tool may well be alleviated by allowing windoc to repair the problems it finds. try it and see.
as for installing w98se on top of itself to correct errors, i have heard two different versions or opinions.... that this is not effective, and that it can correct some errors, i.e, restore missing or corrupted files. so i will defer to others with their thoughts on this.
re, "Can I do this without disturbing Internet Explorer and Outlook Express and my ISP configurations?" ... you ask a good question there, marty. i do not know for sure, and hope that perhaps others will share what they know to be true about this.
bottom line, my advice (accompanied by the standard disclaimer...my attempts at assistance may have nothing to do with what is in fact going on with your computer) is to use the tools and utilities that you have at hand right now, and let them do what they are designed to do. even if that does not entirely eliminate your problem, it should move you a lot closer to eventual resolution.
good luck, and keep us posted
:)
