Amnesty Hypocrisy

From a reader:

<<< Great G-File.

What pathetic hypocrisy dictating to an independent government how it conducts it's internal affairs. Funny how the Democrats are quick to lecture Iraq on how to end their war. In Vietnam the Democrats not only failed to seek to punish the insurgents that were killing American, they handed them the keys to power.
An amnesty proposal which focuses on dividing the opposition is a good idea. If you target the locals and give them a way to end their involvement with the insurgents, then you create a divide even if no one takes advantage of it. It creates a sense of doubt between the locals and the foreigners. If any of the locals lay down their arms they will also bring in a treasure trove of intel. They may or may not reveal the location of safe house or weapons cashes, but the fact that they might know and might talk means that those locations are compromised. The insurgency is much like the mob. It requires secrecy. It operates in the shadows. If a mobster turns states evidence and brings down a mob family, would granting him immunity desecrate the graves of fallen law enforcement? In one sense you may very well be letting someone get away with murder, but life sometimes requires compromises that are not just. I would much rather someone lay down his weapon then to have to hunt down an armed enemy. An amnesty proposal could help end the war and prevent further bloodshed- American and Iraqi.

One additional bit of hypocrisy is that the Democrats have been recognizing the insurgency as legitimate military enemies entitled to legal representation. Thus, except for attacks on civilian targets, the insurgents would not be guilty of war crimes for engaging our military.

The timing of an amnesty offer could not be better. With the death of Al Zarqawii, the insurgents are already looking over there shoulder and wondering whose talking. Such an move would send the right message and would further weaken the cohesion on the enemy. Coming on the heals of the death of Zarqawi and the successful sweeps, this will not be viewed as an act of desperation, but a legitimate call to end the war. What the Democrats really fear is that this might help bring peace. And that just shows how sick that party has become. >>>
