I think he simply wanted to remind the voting public that Cheney has a gay daughter. That has implications among some of the GOP religious right anti-gay voters. I don't think she is the best example of a gay individual that he can choose to name in a nationally televised debate.

What implications? Give them a cause for false outrage and to hog the news? Makes no sense.

Why do you think he chose her instead of A) a well known gay celebrity, or B) a gay person that he knows personally?

I have no idea. But you imply that the mention was planned. I am a supporter of Kerry, and I thought it was a dumb mistake immediately. His advisers would counsel against it. He gave the wingnuts a pretense for false outrage...and all he said is that gays are born gay, which is in fact a statement of support.
