Sunday March 23, 8:52 pm ET

(Adds details)
TOKYO, March 24 (Reuters) - The value of Japan's customs-cleared imports of crude oil totalled a preliminary 527.374 billion yen ($4.36 billion) on a CIF basis in February, up 61.6 percent from a year earlier, the Finance Ministry said on Monday.

The volume of February crude imports rose 17.6 percent from a year earlier to 23.011 million kilolitres.

The value was up from January's preliminary 463.014 billion yen.

The rise in value of February crude imports is largely attributable to the roughly 68 percent increase in crude prices over the year.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry is due to release key February data, including import statistics for crude and oil products, on March 31. ($1=121.06 yen)
