Free Trade only works under the Bretton-Woods agreement. Bretton-Woods is finally dead. Trump just signed the death certificate. Bretton-Wood was predicated on the American Guarantee two things.

A. The US Dollar being the world reserve currency.
B. The US NAVY patrolling the seas.

America is getting ready to make a huge turn in foreign policy. Since we have moved towards energy independence we will no longer need "free trade". The post WWII alliances are going to be more responsible for their own defense because the USA will no longer guarantee protection of free trade on the seven seas. We are going to guarantee our interests under the "America First" principal.

So just like Reagan did by ramping up Oil Production which dropped the price of Russian oil and sank their economy we are going to do the same with tariffs to the Chinese economy to drive up the cost of their goods to make it more palatable to buy American goods and reduce Chinese capital inflows.

This game is not without risk, and it is why it is called a trade "war".
