'Year 2000 problem may hurt defenses
By MIKE BILLINGTON
FORT McCLELLAN, Ala., June 26 (UPI) - Experts attending the Worldwide Chemical Conference say U.S. biological and chemical warfare defenses may be compromised Jan. 1, 2000 by the ''millenium bug'' that could shut down computer systems around the world.

''The consequences could be catastrophic,'' said Dan McGonigle, manager of information systems for the national security division of Battelle, a research and development technology company.
...

Many U.S. allies, private industry, and other American military computers will not be upgraded by 2000, he said.

The conference brought together 650 military and industrial experts in biological and chemical warfare. The three-day conference, which ended Friday, is designed to showcase information about threats from weapons of mass destruction.
.....

That makes the Year 2000 problem ''a serious global threat,'' McGonigle said.

''It's just like a war. We're going to get hit by these computer problems and we're going to get hit hard,'' he said. ''The question is, who's going to go down?''
