Nortel Networks Deploys First 10 Gbps Optical Systems in China
-- Already the leader with 90 percent market share in the world, over 20
large networks, including 5 of the 6 new pan-European optical networks --
BEIJING, Feb. 23 /PRNewswire/ - Nortel Networks (NYSE: NT/TSE: NTL) will be the first telecommunications supplier to deploy a high-capacity 10 Gbps (10 billion bits per second) fiber optic network in China. The company today announced the signing of a multimillion dollar contract with MII/China Telecom to build the Shanghai-to-Nanjing network. The network will have the highest reliability in the industry since it is based on Nortel Networks market-leading OC-192/TN-64X 10 Gbps platform and Integrated Network Management (INM) solution.
Nortel Networks' contract will include the world's most advanced 4-fiber ring network that allows 50 milliseconds restoration in case of a fiber cut. The network will initially operate at 40 Gbps but can be easily upgraded by adding more wavelengths (different light colors to transmit information within a fiber). Nortel Networks is currently deploying systems capable of operating at 320 Gbps, and offers an industry-leading Bit Error Rate of 10(-15) on its 10 Gbps platform -- which is 1,000 times better than existing networks.
The Shanghai-to-Nanjing 457 km-network will be managed in Shanghai by Nortel Networks' powerful network management system, INM (Integrated Network Management).
Nortel Networks' INM Optical Network Management Solution is being used by over 300 customers worldwide and manages more than 85,000 broadband network elements in service. It offers comprehensive network management functionality to manage multi-vendor, multi-domain and multi-technology networks. INM uses an open architecture where network operators can design applications to suit individual needs resulting in a more flexible and powerful network and service management capabilities.
The impressive results achieved recently internationally with our 10 Gbps system, demonstrates that Nortel Networks made the right design choice by developing a product conceived from day one as a global system,'' said Mike Unger, president, Optical Networks, Nortel Networks. ''Over the last few months, Nortel Networks has been selected to equip five of the six new pan-European optical networks.''
With more than 90 percent market share in the world, Nortel Networks has achieved a leadership role in large capacity optical networks in the telecommunications and networking industry. Already, more than 20 large network operators around the world have chosen Nortel Networks' 10 Gbps solution to equip their networks. With systems commercially deployed at 320 Gbps per fiber, Nortel Networks' systems can significantly resolve bandwidth bottlenecks as telecommunication carriers evolve their networks. Carriers are now able to support smooth transition to operating new services such as broadband multimedia transmission and high-speed Internet access, meeting current and future customer network needs. |
