Most transactions these days are electronic. You can back a debit card by a checking account in USD, or by one holding Bitcoin, or by one that is funded with precious metals. No need for your cheese grater. If things slide so far that electronic payment systems are not feasible, then we'll have bigger problems than what currency to use.
