George Ou at ZDNet gave absolutely no justification for his 7 weeks number. The other link you gave was also an irrelevant rehash, not a direct report of what Otellini said.

So I've searched all the stories that reported the July 27 launch and some say "a little less than 10 weeks," others say "a little less than 7 weeks," and others say "in seven weeks."

So unless there is a webcast link buried on Intel's site, there's no way to know for sure what he really said.

My own guess is that he said "a little less than 10 weeks." Because that happens to be the time until the end of Intel's quarter. But the hearers got confused when Intel said that systems would not be widely available until the 2nd week of August. So they mistakenly thought that shipments of CPUs had not started yet and changed the 10 to a 7. In fact some of the reports mistakenly stated that CPU shipments would not start until August.

In any event, some shipments occurred before the launch on July 27, so there will undoubtedly be more than 1M Conroe+Merom shipped in Q3.

(Since 7/27 was the launch of "Core 2 Duo," and that designation applies to both desktop and notebook chips, that Conroe and Merom are included, but Woodcrest is not.)
