Scandal rocks on

By NIC CECIL

THE oil bung allegations last night threatened to destroy the credibility of the United Nations.

MPs demanded an independent probe into whether Saddam Hussein used massive bribes to influence voting by France and Russia.

They both have a powerful role as permanent members of the UN Security Council — and refused to back Britain and America in the run-up to the Iraq War.

Saddam is alleged to have handed out cash for votes and other favours and siphoned 10 billion dollars from oil sales meant to feed starving Iraqis. Former Labour minister George Foulkes said UN Secretary General Kofi Annan must allow an independent inquiry.

And Labour MP Hugh Bayley, added: “We need an investigation to stop this kind of abuse and reveal whether Security Council votes were being bought.”
