I made a special study of Nazi economics, and the consensus among economic historians is that the reforms which brought Germany out of the Great Depression had already been instituted by Hitler's predecessors. The Nazis "cooked" their books shamelessly.

Churchill was, of course, a war leader, and we always give our leaders a lot of power during wars when we are fighting for our very existence.

Roosevelt did fine as a war leader, too. He did a couple of really good things to get us out of the Great Depression, both done immediately after taking office. One was declaring a Bank Holiday, shutting down all banks all over the country, and only allowing the solvent ones to reopen. The other was going off the Gold Standard.

His attempts to control free enterprise through central planning did not help.

So, I agree that strong leaders are useful during wars. But not otherwise.
