White House Calls Celera's Gene Mapping Step "Important"
Dow Jones Newswires

WASHINGTON -- The Clinton administration Thursday called the announcement by PE Corp.-Celera Genomics Group (CRA) that it had finished the first step in sequencing the genes of a single person an "important step."

"It is obviously a very important step. They have basically finished the first phase of sequencing the human genome," White House Spokesman Joe Lockhart said.

Lockhart also said that Celera's success was partially attributed to the federal government's work in the Human Genome Project, the public effort to decipher the entire human genome.

"I think it is also an example of how private companies have worked in conjunction with the public Human Genome Project. Obviously, Celera has talked about how they have used a lot of the information from the public project in their own work," Lockhart said.

Celera and the federal government have locked horns in the past over the issue of mapping the human genome. Celera devised a new technology which it says will allow it to complete the mapping of the human genome well ahead of the government's efforts to do the same.

At the same time, the Clinton administration has called on Celera to publish its findings but the company has declined. Celera has said it will eventually make all its information public but wants to devise a data bank first.

The Human Genome Project makes all its findings public every 24-hours. -By Alex Keto, Dow Jones Newswires, 202 862 9256; alex.keto@dowjones.com
