Former city contractor Frank Fradella, who was a key witness in the trial that led to the conviction of former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin, was sentenced to one year and a day in prison in federal court Wednesday.

Like others who helped the case against Nagin, Fradella cooperated with federal investigators and received a lighter sentence in return. He faced a maximum of five years in prison.

Among the testimony that led to Nagin's conviction on federal corruption charges, Fradella testified that he reached out to Nagin in October 2008, after his company Home Solutions was disqualified from bidding on a contract to rebuild and remodel Landry High School after Hurricane Katrina. Fradella told the jury this was after he had already sent Nagin tens of thousands of dollars in bribes.

Fradella pleaded guilty in July 2012 to securities fraud and conspiracy to bribe an unnamed official who later became known as Nagin.
