Nortel (Northern Telecom) Wins SDH Contract from Telewest Communications plc

SURREY, U.K., July 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Nortel (Northern Telecom) (NYSE: NT) has been awarded a multi-million dollar contract by Telewest Communications plc for Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) transmission equipment comprising Nortel TN-16X (2.5 Gbit/s), Nortel TN-4X (622 Mbit/s) and Nortel TN-1X (155 Mbit/s) Add/Drop Multiplexers with integrated network management. The contract also includes customer training and a dedicated three person support team specialising in project management, systems engineering and network
management engineering to oversee the effective implementation of the network.
The equipment is being rolled out between May 1997 and March 1998. It will be installed at 20-30 locations around the country stretching from Edinburgh and Uddingston in Scotland, to Bristol and Gillingham in the south.
Telewest chose Nortel as the supplier of this network for a variety of reasons. Nortel's experience within the CATV market sector, the reliability of Nortel's product portfolio and the ability to meet demanding timescales have all been proven in the field. The capability of Nortel's TN-16X to provide advanced video integration is paramount. Nortel's willingness to assign a dedicated support team specifically to Telewest Communications plc also demonstrated a commitment to customer service and satisfaction.
Howard Watson, managing director of Telewest Communications plc's Network Services Division stated, "All installation dates for this equipment are vital. We chose Nortel as our supplier as a direct result of the company's proven ability to meet such demanding timescales."
The network will be used to support digital TV services which will be launched by Telewest during the fourth quarter of 1997. In addition to digital television, this extension to Telewest's current network will link existing franchises enabling the organisation to interconnect their telephony switches thus reducing third party interconnect charges. The capacity will also exist to sell high bandwidth data services on demand.

Nortel's press releases are also available through Company News On-Call by fax at 800-758-5804, ext. 122158 or at prnewswire.com.
