GOP in the House show some gumption

Betsy's Page

House GOP members have rebelled against the leadership who were steamrolling through a renewal of the Voting Rights Act. Almost 80 members of the Republican caucus objected to provisions of the Act which require southern states who had been guilty of terrible disenfranchisement of black voters in the 60s to get Justice Department preclearance of any change in voting practices. Although, there seem to be no pattern of disenfranchisement today limited to the South, the stigma remains and so any effort by Southern states to remove the requirements are immediately met with accusations of racism from the usual suspects.

The other issue that is stirring those GOP members to object to the renewal are the provisions requiring ballots in a foreign language whenever there are 5% of the naturalized citizens who can't read English well enough to comprehend the ballot. Ostensibly, that might sound reasonable, except when you realize that those same people had to pass a civics test in English in order to get naturalized. The House members want to strip this requirement out. If states feel that their citizens can't understand the ballot, they can translate it themselves. But the federal government doesn't need to have the unfunded mandate requiring it. Good for those GOP members who risked all the allegations of racism that they will receive about insisting on these common sense changes.
