Forgive, I was probably just going off; it was late and I was tired. As I understand it, a kiretsu is a "gang" of companies that have the backing of a bank. The point here is to break the competition, even if you have to cut your profits to nil in order to do so. Manufacturing capacity certainly helps such an effort, and my understanding was that the asians were expanding capacity without regard to what it cost to do so (in terms of borrowing). Certainly, without tariffs, our industries would have found it difficult to keep up in the short term (case in point, the automotive industry). I assume that US retailers of their products came out better than did the kiretsus.
