Microsoft would not be the only one hurt by free services. I can combine my product with Alta Vista and for $00.00 per month you can get "word processing, spreadsheets and graphics." No more upgrades for software." You also get Internet access and a bunch of content thrown in for free as well.

You see, the same powers that are preying on MSFT's franchise are preying on AOL's as well. If anything, AOL is more at risk, since the free office suite software and free Internet access is available right now while their partner's product is still in press release stage. That is why I think AOL may find the impetus to license such a product before their partner comes out with it. If Excite, Yahoo and especially Alta Vista, who actually has Internet access capabilities now, decide to offer an Office suite, it would leave AOL out in the dust in terms of offerings. Their loyalty to Sun will cost them marketshare and mindshare.
