It is heart-breaking. What do you say to a Syrian dissident who is facing prison and quite possibly torture? Can you tell him that the West will support him, that journalists will condemn the regime that beats him..... Oh my God... Life under a totalitarian system. I knew thee well. The Soviet dissidents of the 60's and 70's - at least - knew that they had the moral support of the Free World. To do what they did - while such a large part the Western press and of its political and cultural leadership would be in a hurry to kiss Lenny Brezhnev's ugly fat ass - would be absolutely impossible.
