Cost of down going up because of bird flu

Forget higher prices for heating oil and propane. There's another factor driving up the cost of staying warm this winter: the avian flu.

Prices for some of the staples of home decor - down comforters and feather pillows - have risen this year, and the bird flu is a prime reason. In January it hit poultry flocks in China, which is the largest supplier of down to the U.S. The result: Officials there killed tens of thousands of ducks and geese, causing prices of down and feathers to surge to their highest levels in five years.
