L--on who uses bmp files, this is just a guess: I have from time to time seen photo files online, which were produced by scanning an 8 x 10 print. A high resolution scanner, particularly an older model, might simply write the file as bmp, particularly if the scanning software was fairly old. I once made the mistake of downloading one of these photos, which had somewhere around 3 mp, without any compression. It took somewhere near 1-1/2 hours for the download.
