A long term effect from this market drop will be the baby boom generation pushing out their retirement expectations. They have been relying in large part on the value of their equity investments which have gone up in smoke. Many will have to stay in the work place, many will have to return to work who had expected their nest egg to endure. This will have a broad effect on the competitiveness and inflationary potential in the economy. Part time professional skills will compete with full time job-holders to keep wages down. Savings rates will probably surge into "safe" money building strategies.. conservative reservoirs of investment will find their balance sheets strengthened. To a lesser, but significant extent, Americans will probably cut back on spending just as the Japanese did when their population bubble moved into a less agressive consumer/speculative stance as their market experienced severe declines.
