Hi Dan, Reading between the lines of the letter that Santiago posted I recognize potentially similar conflicts that others have had with the Lords table and water baptism. The author of that letter didn't elaborate on what he disliked about the ordinances. Was it the emphasis that was placed upon them or what was declared as their meaning in the church he attended? The RC institution teaches transubstantiation according to their doctrine, or rather church law, is an essential belief. They must believe that they are consuming the actual body and blood of Christ as the wine and bread are mystically transformed by the priest during the mass and that it is not done as a symbolic ceremony only. Not believing that is heretical for them. What ever happened to "do this in remembrance of me?" Infant baptism is not scriptural either but how many "Christian" churches insist on it. I was sprinkled as an infant when I had no choice in the matter but following my conversion to Christ as an adult I chose to follow His example of baptism after I believed. A friend of mine has complained to me of his churches emphasis on baptism as something that has to be earned. Their pastor informed my friends son that before he could get baptized he wanted to see examples of fruit in his life i.e. taking his bible to school, attending all church functions etc. The boy had made a profession of faith and is saved. Your example of Phillip and the Ethiopian eunuch sure counters that one. People believed first and were baptized right after. Complicating simple issues and wrapping them in traditions tend to get away from the simplicity that is in Christ. Aught not the churches to put as much emphasis on the importance of sharing the gospel? I wish he had elaborated on these topics in the letter to provide more insight as to what had turned him.
