re, "I guess this is where one decides how dangerously one wants to live"...

for a guy who uninstalls and reinstalls netscape with great frequency, you sure sound concerned! <g3>

all joking aside, the This is a generated file! Do not edit message looks scary, i do not know why it's there, everyone of the netscape champions on the newsgroups blow right past it without nary a blink. i recall having the same misgivings, but i guess it's part of that "gotta take your foot off first in order to get to second" mentality. <g>

besides, i put my faith in the fact that many knowledgeable and helpful folks on newsgroups (and in the netscape help files themselves!) were telling me it was okay. kinda' like i am doing with you. <g3>

i would never, NEVER recommend someone do something that was dangerous or risky or questionable, or even that i hadn't done.... without noting that in bold letters.

so, you can take it from me, if you follow the printed directions, no harm will come to you or your pc or your browser from editing the prefs.js file exactly as i have indicated. i have done it myself perhaps twenty times.... tried something, then changed it back, or tried it and it worked. it's cool. just watch your step. <g3> and back stuff up.

re, "I'd rather be in Winnipeg than screw around with any of this stuff"

hey, you'll get no argument from me, rick.

a fellow was on the thread awhile ago telling us that he would rather climb a mountain or ride a bike than fix his pc. so be it. lot of that going around, no doubt! <g3> as i explained to him, this is not the computer defense thread, nor are we advocating geekdom as a way of life. i like the beach, and fresh air, and hiking and all manner of other things, too. but when i need my pc to operate properly, i hang out on the computer learning thread to see if i can facilitate that condition.

:)
