Hi Mark,
I recently bought Drive Image and have been thinking about various ways to use it effectively. The tip from Scot's Newsletter caught my eye (reproduced at the end of this post,) but on further reflection it seems flawed. What about other things stored on the partition, like programs? They would be erased when restoring the image to provide a clean install.
I did restore a saved partition including the operating system without a hitch. It's a great feeling to know I have a reliable backup. My latest project is to boot into dos with network support so I can use the hard drives on the two machines to store images of the other. My track record solving network issues is suspect. It's a work in progress. (:-)
BTW, although I like the abilities Drive Image gives me, I've been disappointed with the company's tech support. No help whatever with creating the dos network. Only if you buy Drive Image Pro. The thing is, they advertise the ability to save images to network drives with the basic Drive Image 4.0. They just don't tell you how difficult it is and that you're on your own when it comes to trying accomplish it.

1. PERFECT PREP. After a clean install of Win98SE I eliminate all except the bare bones OS itself, clean the registry using Easy Cleaner by Toni Arts, boot to DOS, run scanreg/fix/opt. Then I run Defrag Pro and, finally, using Drive Image 4.0 image the partition to CDR. Now I have the "perfect" Windows 98 Second Edition ready to "clean install" with all my net and user settings intact ready to roll. --Rick Steele |
